Holiday and Travel Scams UK — How to Book Safely and Avoid Fraud

Updated July 2026 · 7 min read · By Silent Erase | ICO Registered C1971457

Holiday fraud destroys dreams and costs UK travellers millions every year. From fake villas on social media to fraudulent travel agents and bogus airline tickets — the risks are everywhere. This guide shows you exactly how to book safely and what to do if something goes wrong.

Summer surge:
UK Finance reports that holiday fraud peaks in January and February when people book summer holidays and again in summer when last minute deals are sought. The average victim loses over £1,000 and ends up stranded abroad or missing their holiday entirely.

The Most Common Holiday Scams

Fake Holiday Rental Listings

Beautiful villas, apartments and holiday homes listed on social media, classified sites and even legitimate booking platforms that do not exist or are not owned by the advertiser. You pay a deposit or full payment and arrive to find the property is let to someone else, does not exist or looks nothing like the photos.

Fake Travel Agents

Fraudulent travel agencies that take your money for flights, hotels and package holidays that are never booked. They often have professional websites and may even provide fake confirmation documents.

Bogus Airline Tickets

Fake or invalid airline tickets sold at below-market prices. You only discover they are fake when you arrive at the airport.

Holiday Club Scams

High pressure sales presentations at resort hotels offering exclusive holiday club memberships with guaranteed savings. The memberships are worthless and the promised savings never materialise.

Red Flags When Booking a Holiday

🚩
Price is significantly below market rate
🚩
Payment requested by bank transfer only
🚩
No ATOL or ABTA protection mentioned
🚩
Property photos look professionally staged or lifted from stock sites
🚩
Seller is reluctant to video call or show the property live
🚩
No physical address for the travel company

How to Book Safely

Check ATOL and ABTA protection — always book with ATOL and ABTA protected companies. Check at atol.org.uk and abta.com before booking any package holiday.
Use a credit card — Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act protects purchases over £100 made by credit card. This gives you a right to a refund from your card company if the holiday does not materialise.
Reverse image search property photos — use images.google.com to check if property photos appear elsewhere online under different listings or as stock photos.
Book through established platforms — use well known platforms with robust fraud protection rather than private arrangements through social media.
Video call the property owner — for private rentals always video call the owner and ask to see the property live before paying.
