What is a Deepfake?

Voice Cloning Scams

How to Spot AI-Generated Content

Video deepfakes — look for unnatural blinking or eye movement, inconsistent lighting on the face, blurry or inconsistent edges around the face and hair, and audio that does not quite match lip movement.

Voice cloning — listen for an unusual flatness or lack of natural emotion, robotic rhythm or strange pauses and audio that sounds slightly processed. However modern voice cloning is becoming very difficult to detect by ear alone.

AI-generated images — look for unnatural hands with too many or too few fingers, inconsistent backgrounds, strange ear shapes and text within images that is blurry or nonsensical.

The Safe Word Strategy

The most effective protection against voice cloning scams targeting families is establishing a family safe word. Choose a word that only your immediate family knows and that anyone claiming to be a family member in distress must use before you take any action. This simple step defeats even the most convincing AI voice clone.

Call your children and grandchildren and agree on a safe word. Keep it simple and memorable — something only your family would know. If anyone calls claiming to be a family member in trouble but does not know the safe word hang up immediately.
